As I’ve recently mentioned, I miss spending time appreciating nature in my parents’ backyard. I took this picture while I was still staying there (probably two months ago), and there were actually two turtles before Kahlua scared the other one off. I’d really like to find a place with lots of wild animals within walking or bike riding distance, but I don’t think one exists. Maybe I’ll have to settle for a place with lots of squirrels.

Poor thing hasn’t seen a wave in years. Today, she got wet.

This was taken about a week or two ago while cruising around the Charleston Harbor on a friend’s boat one late afternoon. As much as I miss driving really fast and scaring tourists on the very old and narrow John C. Grace Bridge, built in 1929, the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge makes a much better landmark for Charleston.

Regardless of your religion or lack thereof, the statement is so true. There’s something about being outdoors in a beautiful setting and soaking it all in that takes you just a little bit higher. It’s a tiny little reminder that there’s so much to be grateful for and so much more to life. And that is why I miss my parents’ back yard.

Among the millions of other things I have been trying to get done, I finally took the time today to wax one of my boards. Now I just need to make the time to get out on the water, and I don’t even give a shit what the waves are like because more than anything right now, I just need to paddle. The last thing I want is a repeat of last summer because I don’t like getting my ass kicked or pissing blood.* So, this year I’m taking baby steps. If I don’t work on building my upper body strength back up, I’ll be screwed when there’s decent surf.
* Fin to the kidney. No bueno.

Yesterday, my friend Brandy brought some balloons to my birthday dinner for me. The others have lost their float, but this one is still going strong.
[Edit Jul15.2011: Three weeks later, and it’s still floating like a champ.]

Taken yesterday at Station 28 on Sullivan’s Island around high tide. It was a beautiful day, and spending some alone time at the beach was just what I needed, a little kick-start to my new life.

It’s nearly 3AM, and I am wide awake. After laying in bed for over an hour, I finally decided to get up and go outside, and almost instantly I was reminded of why I used to love spending so much time outside here in my parents’ neighborhood at night: absolute serenity.
The moon was full and bright, and as the clouds passed over, the shadows in the moonlight came and went. Everything was calm and still with the faint sound of crickets and tree frogs in the distance, and then you could hear the leaves start to rustle, the sound growing louder as the breeze approached. Despite the chill it brought, even while wearing a sweatshirt and fleece pajama pants, it felt nice. And then, the sound of the breeze moving through the trees faded into the distance just as quickly as it had approached.
If it wasn’t for the fact that I had intended to get up early in the morning to get a ton of shit done, I probably would’ve spent a lot more time out there. Instead, I’m going to try once again to fall asleep. And, if I’m still awake in an hour, I’m going to stuff my face until my blood sugar spikes and I pass out.

This looks like the desert, but it’s actually the beach. Yesterday I went to Sullivan’s at Station 28 with four of my girl friends, and the tide was incredibly low. We actually laid out in the middle of what is normally the water before the giant sandbar, and we couldn’t even see the waves breaking on the other side. That small black dot on the horizon is actually a person standing on the sandbar. Craziness.
